MPs: Air New Zealand prices are too high Air New Zealand’s fares to fly to and from Nelson are too high and should be looked at, say Nelson-based MPs Nick Smith and Maryan Street. In April, Waimea Weekly reported on the hundreds of angry locals fed up with paying domestic airfares that were often higher than international fares. Since then, Air New Zealand has announced a record $262 million profit, prompting Prime Minister John Key to say the airline needed to look at its pricing to regional centres. Nelson’s two MPs agree. Labour list MP Maryan Street says Air New Zealand rates are “incredibly high” for regional travellers and she thinks Air New Zealand needs to look at its business model. “Even the short trip from Wellington to Nelson is eyewateringly expensive at times. I think something is wrong with their business model if they can make that much profit and not return some of it via lower prices.” National’s Nick Smith says having a profitable airline is a good thing for the country but prices,

especially those at short notice, need to be addressed and he’s personally spoken with Air New Zealand about the issue. “I’ve discussed the issue both with the Prime Minister and Air New Zealand. My biggest concern is about the price of Air New Zealand’s air fares for last minute bookings around New Zealand.” He says he’d much rather have the national carrier making a profit for reinvestment and more fuel-efficient aircraft than be in Australia’s position, with Qantas posting a loss of over $2 billion. “But the principal concerns I have are around those last minute fares. If people get a Grab-a-seat ticket for $80 or $90 they’re actually pretty happy, but the ones where they’re paying $300 or $400 – as much as it would cost to get them to Australia – are the problem.” Both MPs say they’d like to changes to the fare-structure from Air New Zealand in the next year.

The only problem with providing a foster home for the Nelson Ark, according to Lorraine Renwick, is that you want to keep some of their dogs. The Nelson Ark rescues unwanted dogs and pairs them with at-risk youths, in a programme aimed at getting young people back on track and training and finding homes for the dogs. Lorraine is one of the Ark’s volunteers who provide homes for the

I didn’t have any trouble getting him out of bed in the mornings when he was going to the Ark. It’s been a real transformation.” Francis and Spike were one of six pairs to graduate from the Ark’s course last Friday. Deceased son comes home, family say thanks The funeral for Nelson teenager Wynter Emerson will be held at the Nayland College Hall this Saturday, after an overwhelming response to an appeal to bring Wynter home to Nelson. Wynter’s body was found in Lake Union in Seattle on September 8, after the 18-yearold former Nayland College student was reported missing since attending a music festival in Seattle that ended on September 1. Wynter had been travelling in Canada and the United States for about two months and was expected to return to New Zealand in December. A PayPal fund was set up to help the family bring their son home and this week Wynter’s parents Shon and Ally and his brothers Tyler and Seth issued a statement saying “we have been completely overwhelmed with the support from the local community, our friends, family and Wynter’s employers Benge and Co Stoke and Hangar 58”. “The “Bring Wynter Home fund continues to receive donations from wonderful caring people from all over the world, some of whom we do not even know. People from all across New Zealand and as far away as Norway, UK, Canada and America have made donations both large and small.

Trafalgar Centre and School of Music closed until at least 2016 Two of Nelson’s major event centres will remain closed until 2016, announced Nelson City Council on Monday. Opus has been appointed to oversee the earthquake strengthening of the Trafalgar Centre and the Nelson School of Music auditorium, with construction not due to be finished until 2016. The Trafalgar Centre was closed in December last year, after it was deemed a risk to human life in the event of an earthquake. The Nelson School of Music followed a few weeks later for similar reasons and
the announcement yesterday, that two project managers have been appointed, is the first major step since. For the Trafalgar Centre, concept plans are due on December 1 this year and detailed drawings due in June 2015, with the aim to have it open by February 2016 – more than two years after it was shut. The Nelson School of Music’s concept plans are due on January 20, 2015 with detailed drawings due in September 2015 with the aim to have it open by December 2016 – three years after it was shut.
Nelson mayor Rachel Reese has welcomed the appointments. “We’ve pledged to do all we can to find workable, affordable solutions to reopen both these highly-valued community facilities. Opus is aware of the need for urgency and has committed to delivering to a tight timeframe.” The project managers will begin work within the week in order to keep things moving, she says. “We understand what an important role both venues play in the artistic, sporting and recreational lives of many people in our community.”

The driver of this car that crashed into Jimmy Lee Creek on Beach Road in Richmond last Friday afternoon was lucky the tide was out. Stoke Volunteer Fire Brigade’s Allan Hoult, who works at Higgins on Beach Road, says the driver was not injured and managed to get out of the car after it plunged off the road and into the creek. Allan says it was fortunate the accident occurred when the tide was low otherwise the car may have been submerged.

School bus driver caught speeding A bus driver with over 20 years of experience is facing an “internal process” after being stopped for speeding in a school bus with children on board in Nelson last week. The driver was stopped for doing 48 kilometres an hour in a 40 kilometre an hour school zone outside St Joseph’s on Collingwood Street at 8.50am last Friday. The Suburban Bus Lines bus was one of 121 vehicles stopped on the first day of a two-month road policing operation targeting speed around schools. SBL managing director Tony Cumming told the Waimea Weekly on Tuesday that they are disappointed that one of their buses was speeding and the company was following an “internal process” as a result of the incident. However, Tony says the driver’s excellent record with SBL would be taken into the account during the process. “He has been with us for over 20 years and that was the first time he has had a blemish. It’s not what we would like to see but human error does occur. I guess his speed was borderline but the police are running a campaign to stop speeding and we fully support that.” The bus was a charter service with schoolchildren on board. It was not on a regular school bus route for the Ministry of Education. Tony says SBL drivers are required to meet high standards and the company has processes in place to ensure its drivers are well trained. SBL employs about 80 drivers and operates about 80 vehicles in the Nelson-Tasman region and Tony says it has an excellent safety record. Nelson Bays prevention manager, acting senior sergeant Mike Wardle says it is disappointing to start the operation by detecting a speeding school bus. “These drivers are entrusted with the safety of other people’s children and I would expect they would be more aware than other road users of the risks they faced.” Senior sergeant of road policing for Tasman, Grant Andrews says police are very serious about the latest campaign because young school children are often unaware of the dangers of traffic. “People don’t seem to realise that these children can be so unpredictable. Their age and size makes them even more at risk of being injured on the roads.” Grant says there are a number of 40 kilometre an hour school zone speed limits around the region and that the police’s speed camera tolerance is reduced from 10 kilometres an hour to four kilometres an hour outside schools between 7.30am and 6pm.

Church sells pews, Wednesday, September 3: The Stoke Methodist Church were thrilled with how their garage sale went, selling all of their 20 pews and, with such high demand for them, they could have sold 20 more. There were also plenty of chairs and other furniture items that were sold, making way for upgrades to the church that will better benefit the community. The money raised by the sale of the pews and furniture items will be going towards new chairs and furnishings for their new building. Poppy makers, Wednesday, September 10: There has already been a keen interest in the poppy display to be created for next year’s ANZAC day. Anna and Olivia’s acoustic pop duo named ELAE made it through to the top 10 finalists in last year’s Smokefreerockquest . Next Saturday they will be back again in the biggest weekend of the year for youth music, as six bands and three

Political s e t a lat-m F party wants rates! 1080 ban A Nelson-based political party is hoping to reignite the debate around 1080 poison and one of its candidates, Nelson jeweller Glen Tomlinson, says the government should ban it. The Ban 1080 party doesn’t mince words when describing its main political issue and Glen, who is fifth on the party list and standing in the Kaikouria electorate, says the government should be smarter when trying to deal with pests. “The world has a natural way of finding a balance. Sure there will be rats and stoats that eat birds eggs, but that’s balance.” 1080 poison is used by the Department of Conservation to control pests like rats, stoats and possums. The bright pellets are dropped from helicopter over an area where the pests are, which are then eaten. But Glen says it’s not just the pests that are dying as a result of the poison. “There’s a lot of by-kill. It kills a huge percentage of birds. It’s killing a lot of kea and other animals as well, like dogs and deer.” The party has dozens of hoardings around Nelson and Glen is hoping to use the election to highlight the issue. “We should be using people, not poisons, because they are species specific. At the moment it’s just drop 1080 on the bush and hope.” But environment minister Nick Smith says it would be a disaster if 1080 drops stopped. “I accept that the 1080 issue is a complex one and that there are lots of people who are poorly informed. “Our rats, stoats and possums kill 25 million native birds a year. Our grandchildren will not see kiwi in the wild unless we use the best tools available to knock back those pest numbers. The issue is particularly acute this year because we had a beech mast event. That is where our native forests drop their seed, it happens every seven years and it creates about 50 million tonne of seed and an explosion of firstly, mice, then rats, then stoats. Then when the seeds germinate in spring the massive number – and we’re talking about plague proportions – of rats have no food. The population of rats collapse and that causes starvation for the stoats. Our native birds become the target and they just get obliterated.” He says there’s no way the pests can be trapped. “If you think you can control pests in our massive forests by trapping, you’re dreaming.”

Richmond woman loses 42 kilograms
Sue Colvin is an accountant so she spends a lot of time looking at numbers. But there’s one set of figures the Richmond grandmother never gets tired of seeing and those are the ones on her Weight Watchers graph tracking her “life-changing journey” over the last two years. The graph starts with her weight at 127 kilograms and today sits at 85 kilograms, just 10 kilograms above her target. “I was so overweight and had such bad knees that I could barely walk,” Sue says. “When I went on a family holiday to Australia I had to be wheelchaired around a theme park and the wheelchairs were too small. “That was the motivation for me to lose weight. Now I’ve lost 40 kilograms and I love looking at my graph.” Sue, who was a guest speaker at the Richmond Weight Watchers Open Week last Thursday, told the group that she hasn’t been on a diet but rather a lifestyle journey. “It’s taken two years and I still have a way to go but it’s been life-changing - it’s been a lifestyle journey. It’s amazing because I can’t believe how much energy I have now and how good I feel. It makes such a big difference in so many ways. Last week, I went to a show in Auckland and it was so nice going to my seat without people having to get up to let me past or worrying about knocking someone out with my body.”

And when I left my job to look after my children I got bigger and bigger and I stopped going out in public. “I’d been playing a lot of masters hockey but I got dropped from the team because the coach said I wasn’t fit enough. They didn’t say I needed to lose weight but I knew that’s what they meant. “But the thing that really motivated me to join Weight Watchers was looking at some photos of me on holiday in Samoa. I was 107 kilograms and wore a size 22 dress and knew I had to do something.” Now Ange has lost 29 kilograms, “kicked the anti-depressants” and is back playing hockey. Richmond Weight Watchers leader Becs Armstrong says she has seen members of her group “lose thousands of kilograms” over the last five years but Sue and Ange are two of her stars. The group meets every Thursday at the Richmond Methodist Church on Wensley Rd at 10am, 12pm and 6pm.

Church opens its doors for free lunches
The Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Richmond has joined a growing list of charities and churches around the Nelson-Tasman region that are helping people survive poverty and social isolation by providing regular community meals. Holy Trinity started its community lunches just over a year ago, after conducting a survey to identify the facilities and services used by people over 50 living in Richmond. The survey showed that 14 per cent of people wanted a community lunch and the church responded to that need initiating its Lunch on the Hill project. “Our senior’s team leader Kay Peterson started talking about it a couple of years ago and then the survey showed there was a real need in the community,” Vicar Susan Gill says. “It started off quite slowly but now we have a group of regulars.” Susan says the church provides the lunch for 25 to 30 people on the first and third Tuesday of every month. They also held a community Christmas lunch for the first time last year and it was so popular, with 120 people attending, that they plan to hold it again this year. Although the majority of the people attend the lunches because they enjoy the social interaction, Susan says a number are there because they are “struggling to make ends meet”. Richmond’s Grace Martin says she attends the lunches because she “enjoys the company and friendship and they put on a lovely meal”. Susan says a wide range of age groups attend the lunches with a lot of families turning up in the school holidays. “We had two families who came to our Christmas lunch and they were really struggling. They continue to come to our lunches after that so it was very rewarding being able to help. “It’s all about nourishment. There’s food, friendship and we do give a little reading before the meal so it’s spiritual as well.” Susan says the lunches are cooked and served by two teams of volunteers. The church donates some of the food with the rest of the cost covered by koha. Susan says everyone is welcome to attend Lunch on the Hill which starts with hot drinks at 11.30am followed by lunch at midday. St John’s Anglican Church in Wakefield also provides a monthly community lunch with the next lunch this Thursday.

RICHMOND HOUSE PRICES FALL: Median house prices for August fell in Richmond and Nelson the latest REINZ figures show. The median price for 62 houses sold in Nelson in August was $373,750 compared to $392,500 last August. The median price of 24 houses sold in Richmond was $387,500, down from last August’s $405,500. The average number of days to sell as house was 56 days. REINZ chief executive Helen O’Sullivan says the lack of listings in the region means some buyers with bank approval are unable to buy homes due to the limited choice of properties on the market. LOCAL WOMEN ON DRUG CHARGES: A 22 year old Richmond woman appeared in the Nelson District Court yesterday charged with drug offences from an operation last week. Police were responding to multiple reports that young people were purchasing drugs a Richmond address. Police stopped a 19 year old male making a brief visit to the address. He was stopped after leaving the house and was found to be in possession of a cannabis “tinnie”. He was released with a warning. A subsequent search of the house has resulted in the woman being charged with selling cannabis and possession of cannabis for supply. Function Success An evening function was held recently where 165 suppliers, customers, team members and truck distributors joined with Lloyd Heslop in celebrating thirty successful years in business. Seven new MAN, Western Star, Scania and Iveco trucks were on floodlit display outside Club Waimea where the function was held. Colin Bowden, the Cable Price general manager for parts and service, spoke on behalf of all the suppliers to Lloyd Heslop Motors. He explained how difficult it is for independent dealers to operate successfully in such a competitive commercial environment. Colin stated that it is a real tribute to the quality of services that Lloyd and his team have provided to their custom-
ers for Heslops to have been so successful for such a long period of time. At the end of his speech Colin presented Lloyd and his wife Jan with a plaque in appreciation of thirty years of loyal and dedicated service to the Scania product. Lloyd then spoke about the challenges and successes of doing business over the past thirty years. Moutere Hills opens fitness centre Just a Jessie Johnston

reporter@nelsonweekly.co.nz After the official reopening of the Moutere Hills Community Centre in March this year, the local community joined together again last Friday as their longawaited fitness centre was unveiled. Two devastating fires have tested the strength of the Moutere community but they have come out on top with one of the best recreation centres in the region to call their own. The idea for the fitness centre was first conceived during a meeting just over two years ago when the administration of the facility met with locals to discuss additional services. Some wanted swimming pools and others squash courts but the idea of adding a community gym was at the top of the list. When the centre was hit by the fires last year, plans for a gym were put aside as the rebuild took top priority, but now that it is back to its all time best, and with the necessary funds available, the Moutere Hills Community Centre has finally been able to take on and complete the project. “We had incredible support from the community to get it up and

The Taylors Wanderers Pig Hunt Challenge always provides a great day out for the family with food, entertainment and of course the weigh in. There are a lot of hunting competitions out there but this one is just a little bit different. The Waimea Weekly Wanderers Sports Club Pig Hunt Challenge is back for its third year, so put away your rugby boots and bring out your hunting gear for one more chance to go head to head against your rivals. The hunting challenge offers a great chance for your Junior Rugby Club to win some cold hard cash. What better way to wrap up the rugby season than a bit of friendly competition, off the field and into the bush. It’s up to you to get your entries in now for what is set to be another fantastic weekend of supercharged fun. It’s all about welcoming the challenge to finish up as the top club while supporting the JAB players as they work to become our up and coming rugby stars. The heaviest combined weight
of each participating clubs three heaviest boars takes home the trophy and cash prize for their JAB section. Hunting will kick off at 12am on Thursday 25 September and weigh in will be held on Saturday 27 from 2pm until 5pm. That gives you three days to get out there and catch yourself a monster boar, so try your luck. Be in to win some awesome prizes and support a great local hunting competition. While the event benefits our local JAB players, the hunt is in no way limited to just the rugby players. The event is open to any and all keen hunters; you can simply choose which local rugby club you want to hunt on behalf of when you fill out the entry form. The hunt is hosted by the Taylors Wanderers Sports Club, who will be going all out to take that trophy for themselves; spurred
on by their previous success in 2013. There’s nothing like being the hunting champions and WARRANTY proudly parading that trophy. Thanks to some extremely generous sponsors, there is a $15,000 prize pool on the table so not only can you take home a cash prize for your JAB, you can also win yourself a prize for taking part. Last year’s competition was hugely successful with a total of 200 entries and over 40 boars weighed in on the day. Second heaviest earns himself $300, best tusks $100 and heaviest stag $250. The women’s section prize for the heaviest boar will be $200 and second heaviest will take home $100. The intermediate section will also feature some great prizes for heaviest pig, second heaviest and third heaviest and there will be a prize waiting for heaviest stag. Juniors won’t be eligible for cash rewards but there will still be some great kid’s prizes waiting for heaviest possum,
hare, rabbit goat or pig as well as best dressed possum. Entrants need to be aware that the absolute final time you can present your animal for weighing is before 5pm on Saturday September 27. The minimum entry weight across all sections is 25 kilograms and you are to enter feral boars only, no barrows or domestic pigs will be eligible. Sows will only be accepted in the women, intermediate and junior sections. All pigs must be weighed in one piece with head attached and all the offal must be removed. They must also be
in edible condition and may be chilled but not frozen. Pigs must be weighed in by the person who caught them. Goats are to be gutted, and any intermediate entrant who enters must be able to tell the tall tale about how they were involved in the kill. This event is about far more than just hunting; it’s about putting friendly rivalry to the test and involving the whole community in a fun day out. Weigh in day will be one not to miss and if the weather behaves itself, promises to be a popular

Murchison visitor centre still up in the air Simon Bloomberg
The Tasman District Council needs to find an alternative plan for a visitor information centre in Murchison after the Commercial Hotel pulled out of proposal to incorporate a centre in its premises on the town’s main street. The Commercial Hotel had last month successfully submitted a proposal to offer visitor information services in Murchison. It had obtained a grant of $12,000 from the council to help set up a visitor centre to replace the one funded by Nelson Tasman Tourism that closed in June. Commercial Hotel owner Sylvia van der Oest says they submitted their proposal because they believed all other options to maintain a visitor centre had been exhausted. But last week, Sylvia announced she was shelving the plans because she did not want to “stand in the way” of a community initiative to keep a visitor centre open. The Hope School Country Bazaar is the school’s main fundraiser for the year and community wide support is much appreciated. This year the funds raised will be going towards the upgrade and development of their library. This includes a new issuing system, a variety of new books and new shelving and the modification of the library environment. The students, staff and school helpers have all been working hard to make this day successful and enjoyable for everyone in the Hope community and further afield. Gates open Saturday 20 at 10am until 2pm and a voting booth will also be set up for those who don’t want to miss having their say in the election. There is plenty of parking along the road and eftpos facilities available, Hope School will be looking forward to seeing you there.

It has once again been a very successful winter season with a fun atmosphere, good progress for players and many visitors enjoying Wakefield facilities. The live green has been reseeded and will be ready for play later in the spring, but meanwhile, we are grateful for the foresight of the Club in building the synthetic green and all the effort and generosity of members and the community involved with this. The building has been painted inside and out giving the centre a fantastic lift and we have rearranged the indoor play areas. It has been interesting to see how favourite play areas have changed; most of the children are drawn to the collage area when they arrive at the centre before choosing other activities to move on to. It’s beautiful to see new friendships developing and confidence growing, not only among the children, but adults too. Wakefield Playcentre is on Treeton Place and sessions run from 9am until 12pm weekdays. The centre caters for children from 0 – 6 years old. Fresh look for Fresh Choice Richmond Fresh Choice is getting a makeover, with new shelving and electronic price ticketing and a paint job, scheduled to be completed by the end of the month. The project commenced last week when staff started replacing the shelving with a new system, that not only looks smarter but will accommodate more products and make them more accessible to shoppers, store co-owner Gary Watson says. A
new electronic ticketing system will be installed at the same time to ensure all the price tickets are right up-to-date and easy to read. “We aren’t adding any more shelves but we’ll be able to fit an extra 1300 new grocery lines because the new shelves have a better layout,” Gary says. “We’d like to apologise to customers for any inconvenience but when we finish it will make shopping easier for them. We’re also giving the store a coat of

Runners gear up for coastal classic

Sixty runners from Nelson and Tasman will be lining up in this Saturday’s Abel Tasman Coastal Classic trail run, from Awaroa Lodge to Marahau in the Abel Tasman National Park. The 36 kilometre event has attracted 350 competitors and has been sold out for months. It is the 21st running of the Nelson Events race which has been included in UK Trail Running Magazine’s top 50 worldwide trail runs.
A number of world class runners have competed in the event, including Scott Molina, Erin Baker, Greg Fraine, Jonathan Wyatt, Phil Costley and Rod Dixon. Three runners who lined up in the inaugural event in 1994, Chris Gates , Colin Rolfe and Owen Rowse, will be back again on Saturday, along with the Motueka Round Table and Motueka Search and Rescue, who have been there every year to offer valuable support for the iconic event.
Richmond ninth grade girls’ football team the Storm enjoyed celebrating a successful season at the club’s prizegiving last Saturday. The Storm ended the season on a high by beating the boys teams at the ninth grade tournament at Neale Park, winning the final against Accelerate 3-2 in a penalty shootout.

Gridiron makes a return to Saxton Former Makos’ manager takes charge of NZ 7s team A “rippa gridiron” competition for youths is to be held at Saxton Field from October to December this year. The rippa version of gridiron is played using flags and is quick to learn, especially for boys and girls who are familiar with sports like rippa rugby, soccer, and netball. Just as importantly, Junior Rippa Gridiron is a relatively safe sport for both boys and girls, and suitable even for younger children. It emphasises speed and strategy rather than size and brawn. The games will be held at Saxton

As far as first weeks at a new job go, Jenelle Strickland isn’t complaining. The former Tasman Makos’ team manager had just been appointed as the manager for the New Zealand women’s sevens rugby team when she was put on a plane to Glasgow, to get a feel of life at the Commonwealth Games. “Best first week ever,” she says. “I had a bruised arm by the time I left Glasgow, from me pinching myself at how lucky I am.” After five years as the first woman to manage a professional rugby team in New Zealand, Jenelle quit her job at the end of last season’s successful run and took a job at Tasman Rugby Union headquarters. Soon after that she was shoulder-tapped to apply for the sevens job and, after going through the interview process, was appointed last winter. Janelle will still be based in Nelson and will fly to training camps in Tauranga, and to tournaments around the world when necessary. She is expecting to be away from home for around four months of the year. As well as travelling to places like Dubai, Holland, the United

States and China on the women’s sevens world circuit, the big carrot is the Olympic Games in Brazil in 2016. She says having the opportunity to work in that environment will be “amazing”. “For me, this is a dream job in terms of getting to manage a national team and taking that team to the Olympics. Everyone who loves sports will know it’s a huge opportunity just to go to the Olympics and watch it, let alone be a part of a team that’s competing in it.” The women’s sevens team is new, created after the sport was granted Olympic status, but expectation on it to win gold at the Olympics will still be massive. As manager, it’s Jenelle’s job to organise flights, accommodation, make sure the players are
getting the right physiotherapy treatment, help develop team culture, set team protocols and she will also be the team’s main media contact. She says being able to manage a national team, while based in Nelson, is the best of both worlds. “I’m stoked about being able to be based in Nelson. I love it here and didn’t really want to have to move to pursue my career, but I thought I may have had to. So the fact I don’t is awesome, because I can be around my friends and family and my support network when I am home.” Jenelle’s first tournament in charge is a pre-season tournament in Noosa at the start of October, before the World Series tournament starts in Dubai at the beginning of December.

Waimea dominate Get2Go challenge
Waimea College continued its dominance of the Nelson regional Get2Go competition, although the gap is closing with Nayland College showing plenty of promise to finish second. Last Friday, nine teams of year 9 and 10 students from five schools competed in rock climbing, orienteering, mountainbiking and a problem-solving challenge in the Get2Go regional final based at Tahunanui. Waimea College won the competition finishing 76 points ahead of Nayland to qualify for its fifth national finals on Great Barrier Island in December. It was another good result for Waimea College which has finished in the top five at the last two national finals although teacher Jane Orbell says they didn’t have it all their own way-

though. Nayland College won the mountainbiking race and finished second in the orienteering and problem-solving. “Nayland did really well which is good for us because it gives our students some competition,” Jane says. “It’s also good to see more schools entering Get2Go this year because it’s such a great event - it’s a good opportunity for students interested in outdoor pursuits.” Jane says Waimea’s top team of Jaimie Prestidge, Brooke Matheson, Brooke Robertson, Mikayla Lowrey, Harry Talbot, Theo Smith, Cameron Jones and Mac Karalus benefited from having four team members who had been to last year’s nationals. “It gave us such a big advantage
because they have competed at that higher level. They were able to use that experience to lead the team.” Waimea College’s second team of Zac Richardson-Hall, Bodhi Wardle, Bradley Davis, Daniel Endersby, Ashleigh Lowrey, Sophie Tasker, Maggie McLean and Georgia Watson finished third. Garin College 1 was fourth. Jane says the next step is to select an eight-student team for nationals to be held at the Outdoor Pursuits Centre on Great Barrier Island on December 8-12. “It’s going to require the students to have a slightly different skill set. There’s not going to be any mountainbiking and there will be lots of kayaking and rafting so they will need stamina and endurance.”

Richmond wins premier netball final Carol Cook
Netball Reporter editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz The Premier 1 final lived up to all expectations when a tightly-contested game was played between top seed Richmond and defending champions Jacks OPD. In the four clashes this season the spoils are been shared with two wins apiece, however the slate was wiped clean and the winner took the title. Jacks were without their ace goal shooter, Ani Waitai however the team were well aware of her coaching commitment with the Tasman Men at their New Zealand Championships and had prepared for her absence. Hannah Mead handled the GS bib with aplomb to defeat Stoke NBS 5251 in the semi. It was mooted in netball circles that the competition had been such this year that any one of the top four could take the title. And going into the final there were a whole lot of “netball experts” sitting on the fence when it came down to predicting a winner. Jacks began well by converting a turnover to open the score and then scored on their centre pass to be 2–0 up, however Richmond did exactly the same to even the ledger. Richmond soon found their rhythm and scored eight out of nine goals to take a commanding lead, while Jacks looked to be trouble. The green team rallied to bring the score to a more respectable 8–12 at the first break. The second period was more flowing as the score indicated with a 16–13 quarter, with Richmond looking to be in control with a seven goal lead. Weekly meter readings re-commence for the summer irrigation season from Monday 27 October 2014. For those consent holders who know they are not using any water for the entire 20142015 water year, you must advise the Council of this prior to 27 October 2014 to avoid any unnecessary follow ups. Tasman View Rd – Plantation Forest Harvest Update – Harakeke Hancock Forest Management (HFM) manage the cutting rights for forestry plantations on privately owned land which adjoin Tasman View Rd and Hewetsons Rd in Tasman on behalf of its investment client. HFM would like to advise that 44,000 tonnes is now mature and will be harvested in accordance with market demands. In addition there is several younger age classes within the area to which harvesting is planned out to year 2027. HFM would like to take this opportunity to remind people that this forest is privately owned by a number of small land owners and therefore forested areas are not for public recreation. Also that traffic control measures will be in place to manage the hazards associated with harvesting, and that all signage and direction from crew must be adhered to ensure the safety of road users. Temporary Road Closure Tasman District Council advises that the following roads will be closed for a period of one day between 1 September 2014 and 17 December 2014 to allow the Department of Conservation to undertake pest control. • Cobb Valley Road, between the Cobb power-station and the Cobb Reservoir lookout. • Wangapeka River Road from Dart River Road. The time of closure is weather dependent. Signs will be erected at the junction of Takaka Valley Highway and Cobb Valley Road for the Cobb Road closure. Road works at Salisbury roundabout Some major road works will be happening at the Salisbury Road / Champion Road / Main Road Stoke roundabouts, starting 30 September until 19 October 2014.
